Founded by David Appleton and Philip Deeley in 1984, Appletons is a well-established firm of landscape architects, ecologists and environmental consultants with offices in Bolton (Greater Manchester) and Ludlow (Shropshire).
The practice offers expertise at all stages of a project from conception through the research, feasibility and planning and masterplanning stages, to design, construction by contract, aftercare and long-term management and general consultancy.

Lorna has over 27 years experience as a professional chartered landscape architect. She has had responsibility for the design and implementation of a broad range of urban and rural landscape projects for both public and private sector clients including work on urban regeneration and townscape based projects. She has considerable experience in environmental impact assessment studies including new village settlements, leisure, housing, commercial and industrial related developments. She also worked extensively on projects involving sensitive ecological habitats and protected species with mitigation and conservation requirements and she is fully conversant with environmental legislation.
Specific experience includes urban park design and involvement with urban regeneration strategies, landscape masterplanning of large scale industrial and commercial developments, design for health care and recreational and residential land use and road and railway corridor studies. Particular expertise in project management and administration of hard and soft landscape projects and long term maintenance contracts and fully conversant with Construction, (Design and Management) Regulations 2007. In the past 5 years has conducted survey work associated with ecological and environmental management issues within the construction sector and she regularly provides consultancy in respect of BREEAM Healthcare and Code for Sustainable Homes. She has considerable experience in undertaking tree surveys for planning applications and in relation to amenity landscapes, risk assessments and public inquiries. She has acted as expert witness in litigation matters relating to trees and arboricultural issues. Lorna also has extensive experience as a consultant working within design teams, in heading up major design team projects and is experienced in planning appeals and attendance as expert witness in Public Inquiries/litigation.

David has been with Appletons for over 18 years and is a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute. He has been responsible for overseeing the successful delivery of numerous schemes across the United Kingdom from prestigious garden designs through to multi million pound developments.
David has the ability to take on projects at any stage of the design process from initial conception through to on site supervision. He has a keen eye for detail and a particular flair when it comes to high quality graphic presentations and photographic montages as part of an LVIA. His horticultural and construction background gives him a broad knowledge base which allows him to assist a client in numerous aspects of a design.
He is knowledgeable on Ecology matters and is able to advise on protected species surveys, mitigation and conservation requirements. He is able to offer landscape planning support on matters relating to Landscape & Visual Impact Assessments and Environmental Impact Assessments. He also undertakes Tree Surveys and Arboricultural Impact Assessments to BS5837 for which he recently gained Technician level status with the Arboricultural Association.
David's recent projects have been focused within the Healthcare and Housing sectors for both public and private clients. He has been heavily involved in the successful delivery of numerous golf course and leisure developments, the £50million Harbour Mental Health Unit on the Fylde coast and the successful appeal for 1200 homes in Warrington.

David has over 30 years experience as a landscape architect and horticulturist. Prepared and led varied landscape commissions including design and implementation of large scale landscape projects in both urban and rural situations. General experience includes urban regeneration, industrial and commercial projects, healthcare projects, large scale housing projects, landscape master planning, public open space schemes, environmental impact assessments, highway projects, landfill and land reclamation and river valley schemes.
Specific experience includes feasibility studies and proposals for major housing developments and new village settlements, term consultancies for Trafford Park Development Corporation and The Commission for The New Towns, and consultant and lead consultant as part of design teams involved with various major leisure, commercial and highway developments and undertaking tree surveys and risk assessments.
Also very extensive experience in planning appeals and providing landscape evidence and attendance as expert witness at over 90 Public Inquiries throughout Great Britain, working with leading Counsel.

Elizabeth is an experienced ecologist and a Associate member of the Chartered Institute for Ecology and Environmental Management. She holds a Level 1 Great Crested Newt Licence from Natural England and is working towards her Level 1 Bat Licence. Elizabeth has vast experience undertaking both Phase 1 and UK Hab habitat surveys, and surveys for a range of protected species including bats, great crested newts, reptiles, and badgers. She has also written reports including Preliminary Ecological Assessments, various protected species reports (bats, badgers, hazel dormouse, and great crested newt) and Precautionary Methods of Work.
She has extensive experience working as an Ecological Clerk of Works on both large infrastructure projects and smaller rail projects, where she was responsible for delivering toolbox talks to all site personnel, ensuring Precautionary Working Method Statements and Protected Species Licences were adhered to and completing a range of pre-works checks and supervision of works (which included vegetation clearance, tree felling, re-rail works and ancient woodland soil translocations). In her previous roles Elizabeth assisted senior colleagues with Natural England and Natural Resources Wales bat licence applications and Ecological Impact Assessment reports.

Paul joined the practice in March 2022 as a GIS Technician and ecological assistant. He holds a doctorate in Environmental GIS and the assessment of environmental benefits provided by trees and in urban areas, in particular carbon capture and storage. Paul has also completed a B.Sc. in Environmental Management (1st Class hons), and a Masters by research degree (M.Res) in Environmental Science. The golden thread through Paul’s research and career has been the environmental assessment of brownfield and human modified land and the vegetation, habitats and ecosystem services associated with it.
Paul specialises in Environmental GIS, remote sensing, statistical analysis, habitat and landscape mapping, land classification and characterisation, field assessment, statistical analysis, and ecosystem service assessment of urban green spaces and brownfields.
Paul expertise allows him to work alongside our ecology and landscape teams delivering technical support on Biodiversity Net Gain.

Adam joined the practice in 2024 as a Project Ecologist. They graduated with a BSc (1st Class Hons) in Biology from the University of Sussex, as well as a Masters (MSc) with Distinction in Biodiversity and Conservation from the University of Leeds. Adam is also a Qualifying Member of CIEEM and is working towards his Level 1 Bat Licence.
Adam has varied experience in all aspects of ecological survey work, having surveyed for bats, great crested newts, reptiles, badgers, hazel dormice and Roman snails, as well as conducting UKHab habitat surveys and condition assessments. Furthermore, Adam has written a range of reports including for species surveys, PEA’s, PRA’s, BNG assessments and EcIA’s, and is proficient in using QGIS for mapping and BNG calculations. Finally, he is experienced in ECoW including finger tip searches, destructive searches, vegetation clearance and tile strips. In his previous role Adam acted as an ecologist in Sussex and seasonal surveyor in Leeds.

Philippa joined Appletons in 2025 as a project ecologist and is an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Biology and a Associate of CIEEM. They hold a Mbiol in Zoology from Aberystwyth University and are working towards their class 1 bat licence and GCN licence.
Philippa has experience in surveys for a wide range of protected species including Bats, Badgers, Great Crested Newts, Dormice, Retiles and Water Vole. They also have experience in writing a variety of ecological reports including PEA, EA, BNG, PWMS, EcIA, EcIA scoping, ES Chapter, LEMP, CEMP and MSMPs. They are proficient in QGIS and carrying out Biodiversity Net Gain assessments. Philippa is very familiar with UKhab methodologies and condition assessments, having received training for grassland habitat assessment from the Species Recovery Trust and has worked on acid grassland identification and translocation exercises. At their previous role Philippa worked on projects across the South of England, the Midlands and South Wales as an assistant ecologist.

Philip began his a career in architecture in both private practice and public authorities before qualifying as a landscape architect and town planner. He now has more than 45 years experience in these disciplines.
Philip has been in charge of the firm’s interests in Merseyside and the Wirral during this time and has undertaken several significant projects, including design co-ordination roles at the Liverpool and Stoke Garden Festivals, regeneration of Southport Town Centre, widening of the M60, the design of numerous parks, housing, commercial and leisure projects throughout Merseyside and Greater Manchester and has recently completed the role of landscape masterplanning and planning consultancy for the largest new monastery in Britain at Maryton Grange in Liverpool.
As well as his landscape role in major projects he continues to be active in development planning, planning appeals and general consultancy in planning matters, combining these skills with those he has in landscape and architecture.
Brenda has been with Appletons for over 30 years and is a key member of our office team.
As well as being part of our accounts team, she also co-ordinates the companies bid and competition submissions.
Appletons are looking for a Chartered or Graduate Landscape Architect with experience of leading projects across a range of sectors including residential development, nature conservation, master planning, landscape planning including visual impact assessments, design and build work as part of multidisciplinary teams and health care schemes.
Candidates require strong technical design and verbal communication skills with a background in report writing and administration of small contracts. You need to have a good knowledge of AutoCad, Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop and InDesign. Ideally you should have 2 years experience but not essential. UK driving licence is essential.
You should have the ability to work in a fast paced but friendly team with a positive attitude and resourcefulness. There will be opportunity to develop your personal and professional skills in a supportive environment.

Appletons are looking for seasonal ecologists to join our spring / summer survey team. The survey work may include Bat Surveys, Reptile Surveys and Great Crested Newt Surveys. Experience of undertaking protected species surveys preferred but not essential. The role would suit students working towards a relevant ecology degree or a graduate looking to gain more experience. Ideally surveyors will have thier own transport but this is not essential if local to Bolton. Pay for each survey is a very competitive hourly rate.
