At Appletons, we specialise in helping developers, planners, and landowners achieve Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in line with current planning policy and legal requirements in England. Whether you’re working on a residential development, infrastructure project, or urban regeneration scheme, our experienced ecology consultants provide practical, compliant and cost-effective BNG solutions from feasibility through to implementation.
As a multi-disciplinary landscape and environmental consultancy, we integrate BNG strategies with our wider services including ecology, arboriculture, and landscape planning, ensuring seamless coordination across every stage of the project lifecycle.
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a government-mandated approach to development that aims to leave the natural environment in a measurably better state than it was before. As of 2024, BNG is a legal requirement for most planning applications under the Environment Act 2021.
BNG requires developers to demonstrate at least a 10% increase in biodiversity value, typically calculated using the Statutory Biodiversity Metric. This can be achieved through on-site habitat creation, off-site habitat banking, or the purchase of biodiversity credits—depending on the development type and constraints.
If you’re planning a development that requires Biodiversity Net Gain, speak to the Appletons team for professional advice and support. We provide bespoke BNG strategies that are fully aligned with planning expectations and environmental goals.
